Before the hot noontime sun and the afternoon rain, my husband and I walk around the corner to little parque with views of the Santa Ana church, couples holding hands on benches and vendors selling fresh fruit juices from brightly-colored stands. There is a small market with fruit vegetables, eggs and flowers sold by locals who know only a couple phrases in English. We buy papaya, dragon fruit, mangos, a bushel of limes, lemony basil and dried jamaica flowers.

Our oasis, Casa Granada, is a beautiful home in Mérida, Mexico that instantly takes us from the bustling street to a quiet, air-conditioned little paradise with the soft sound of a fountain coming from the sunroom. In the traditional Talavera tiled kitchen, we squeeze limes and steep jamaica (hibiscus) simple syrup to make beautiful jewel-toned margaritas.

Alongside our afternoon refreshment we eat a fruit salad dressed only with a squeeze of lime and a tiny sprinkling of salt. The bright citrus and serene feeling of watching the 3pm rain fall into our little backyard pool remind me how great it feels to not rely on hotel staff or order from a room service menu for these simple pleasures. These little luxuries come from our little journey to the market and are infused with flavors that only come from slicing limes open on beautiful tiles. Viva México.

Jamaica (Hibiscus) Margaritas
2 oz. tequila
1 oz. lime juice
1 oz. Jamaica syrup
ice, salt, and lime for garnish

Salt the glass rim. Stir together and serve with lime.

Jamaica syrup
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
½ cup dried Jamaica flowers

Dissolve sugar and water in a small saucepan. Boil for two minutes, remove from heat and add Jamaica flowers. Let steep for 10 minutes and strain.

Nicole, our managing editor, recently visited Mérida, the capital of the Mexican State of Yucatán, to celebrate her honeymoon. Here she shares a few of her fondest memories:

A few blocks from Main Square in Mérida, is a cozy little restaurant all dolled up in bright colors and floral prints after it’s namesake, Frida Kahlo. On a warm night on the town, my husband and I ventured from our little oasis home and walked down the historic city’s cobblestone streets for late night eats. Mérida is known for it’s fantastic food scene (with an organic market in the city center on Saturdays) and though we tasted wonderful local and international foods on our trip, our dinner at La Casa de Frida was a highlight.

Specializing in traditional cuisine, Chef Gabriela Praget creates the kind of food she grew up eating, with the flair of a true artist. We started with tart tamarind margaritas and an order of queso fundido- a warm, gooey cheese dip with spicy chorizo and handmade tortillas. Following that cheesy appetizer of my dreams was duck mole. Local birds slow-cooked in the complex chile-chocolate sauce of central Mexico served, again, with fresh tortillas.

With happy, full bellies we strolled back to the Main Square and somehow managed to finish lemon sorbets under the lit cathedral.

A few images from our rental (that we loved!)

So…I never made it to Alt Summit for my talk on travel blogging this week thanks to some airport mayhem. Go figure the travel blogger doesn’t make it to her end destination. I am sad to have missed some time with friends, and I was so looking forward to meeting new ones. In honor of my no show, here are a few Alt attendees that I was hoping to meet.

If you happen to be traveling to Salt Lake this year, check out this fabulous local guide by Vivivnt.

I was really looking forward to hearing Stefan Sagmeister of Sagmeister & Walsh speak. Now I’ll just have to cyber stalk.

Peggy, our creative director, was working on some fun photos with the Citizens of Humanity team at the conference that sounded like a ton of fun. Talking about comfy fashion, check out of our Wear files on Pinterest for some travel inspired fashion.

I would have loved to met Color Me Katie. Amazing artist + delightful personality = must meet…one day.

A big thank you to the fabulous gals behind Alt Summit for including me in the fun this year. Hopefully next year, I’ll actually make it there.

I recently happened across Herb Lester, a small company in London that produces the most beautiful illustrated maps of cities around the world. Each map is a unique, little collectable that is focused on exploring specific themes and aspects of a particular place, like Where the Sidewalk Ends, Austin On The Hoof, How To Find Old LA, and The William Brown Project.

The guides are written and researched in-house and each one is designed and illustrated by a different illustrator, particularly chosen for the subject. Current guides include a few to London, as well as Glasgow, Paris, Berlin, Austin, Chicago and New York. They recently launched one for San Francisco!

This packing tape is also pretty fantastic.
